1. Its original title was Scorn.
The script of the film was written by Derek Kolstad, who initially wrote a revenge thriller titled Scorn. It was originally circulated back in 2012. The writer stated, he took inspiration from the films like 2008’s Taken and 2004’s Man on Fire, which include a story of determined men with special skills out for revenge. However, by the time the movie reached the market in 2014, its title was changed to John Wick. It was because of Keanu Reeves, who kept referring to the plot by the character’s name, and distributor Lionsgate took it as an opportunity to not miss out on free publicity.
2. Charon's name probably has mythological origins.
Lance Reddick, who passed away on 17 March 2023, played a resident caretaker of the Hotel Continental. The hotel was a safe place in the city meant for assassins, hitmen, and other criminals who need a place to stay. He played Charon in the film, which could easily be an alias for the man given his job. In Greek mythology, Charon, the son of Erebus and Nyx (Night), has the duty of ferrying over souls across the Rivers Styx, provided you pay him in coins. In John Wick, Charon is paid in coins at the Continental.
3. John Wick was directed by the stuntmen who worked with Keanu Reeves on The Matrix.
4. The main lead’s name is taken from a real person!
When Derek was writing the script for Scorn, he chose to name his protagonist after his grandfather, John Wick, a businessman from Madison, Wisconsin. Kolstad initially thought his grandfather might not feel good about his name being used for a hitman, he is a simple businessman after all, but in opposition to it, the real John Wick was pretty thrilled. He stated during an encounter with Madison magazine in 2017, "I was tickled by Derek using my name for a movie, and the hitman character was frosting on the cake"
5. The studio never really wanted John Wick's dog to die.
