He joined the club PSV and started playing on the left-wing position. He became a part of Barcelona and represented the club in the 1998-99 La Liga championship. He represented Chelsea in the 2002 FA Cup final. He joined Middlesbrough for the 2003-04 season. He signed with Liverpool in the year 2005.
