About Guru Gobind Singh
Guru Gobind Singh was the tenth and last Sikh Guru. He upheld the rank of guru at the age of just nine. He was a brave fighter and fought many battles in his life. He is known for introducing The Five Ks. His contribution to the Sikh community can never be described in words.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Guru Gobind Singh
- He was just nine years old when he held the position of Sikh Guru at the time Guru Teg Bahadur was ordered to be beheaded by Aurangzeb. Guru Tegh Bahadur went for a peaceful meeting with Aurangzeb at the request of Kashmiri Pandits when was arrested by Mughals and was ordered a death sentence on his refusal to convert to Islam.
- Alongside being a spiritual leader he was also a great scholar. There are several compositions written by him like Chandi di Var, Jaap Sahib, Bachittar Natak, and Sarbioh Granth which are not only read but are worshipped under Sikhism.
- He was a polyglot and had excelled in different languages including Braj Bhasha, Persian Hindi, Gurmukhi, and Urdu.
- Guruji is still remembered for the foundation of Khalsa. He ordered his followers to add the title Singh following their names which means a Lion. Also, he introduced 5Ks which are for Kesh (Hair), he said his followers will not cut their hair like Rishis in Hindu tradition, Kangha (comb to settle the hair), Kara (for self-restraint), Kacchera (underwear) to be ready to fight anytime, and Kirpan (sword as a symbol of the Sikh warrior). He also selected "Panch Pyare" who were ready to sacrifice their lives for the benefit of mankind like Guruji.
- He was also an art lover and invented musical instruments called "Taus" and "Dilruba."
- Though he fought many battles in his life he had not supported violence. He used his sword only to fight against oppression. He was a kind-hearted man but he had never accepted the tyrannical rule of Mughals.
- As a Sikh, you must know that Guruji owned the most expensive and unique weapons at the time. One of them was a javelin called "Nagini Barcha" which was used by Bhai Bachittar Singh to stop a mad elephant. This elephant was sent by the Mughals to attack Sikhs in Chamkaur fort.
- He gave his everything for the Khalsa community and to fight against exploitation by Mughal rulers. Even his four sons sacrificed their lives for the purpose. No monetary benefit or throne was the purpose of his struggle. He just wanted peace and justice for everyone.
- Guruji was an intelligent person and maybe he would be aware of the present days' spiritual gurus. That's why he ordered his followers to accept Guru Granth Sahib Ji as their Guru after him. "Agya Bhai Akal Ki Tabhi Chalayo Panth, Sabh Sikhon ko Hukam Hai Guru Manyo Granth."
