She is an American actress and director. She spent her childhood in Ponce, Puerto Rico but later she moved to the South Bronx with her parents. She went to the Arts High School from where she completed her schooling. Later she went to the Hunter College from where she received her graduate degree. She has four brothers and three sisters. Her sister Magali Alvarado is also an actress. She got married to Draco Rosa in 1990, they have two children, Revel Angel Rosa and Remado Cicero Rosa. She first time met with her husband during the production of the 1988 film Salsa.

She gave her appearance in several movies. She was not only an actress but also a director. She had directed several music videos, some of her well-directed music videos are: "Madre Tierra", "Mas y Mas", "Lie Without a Lover", and "Dancing in the Rain". In September 2004, she received a Grammy Award for giving her appearance as an actress in a music video "Mas y Mas".
