He started his career with theatre and became a member of the Space Theatre Company. In 1982, he moved to London and made his film debut with the title character in the comedy film "Withnail and I". He also played the titular character in the short film "Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life". He played the character of Sir Andrew Aguecheek in the film "Twelfth Night". He appeared as Zander Rice in the superhero film "Logan".
