He had worked as a child artist for small roles but his adult debut was for a lead role in "Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai" which made him an overnight superstar. His performance in science fiction film "Koi... Mil Gaya" as a mentally challenged boy 'Rohit' was also praised. He became a superhero when he worked in Krrish and its sequel. He appeared as a thief in adventure film Dhoom 2. He portrayed Mughal emperor Akbar in historical romance Jodhaa Akbar. Other films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Bang Bang! were also admired by the public.
