He was an american character actor, was born on 2nd february 1909, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, USA. He was so fond of acting from his childhood, he made his debut in movies at the age of 13. Prior to his career as an actor he initiated his career as a lab assistant at the photgraphic shop, after which he got the chance to get in acting. He had done approx 100 movies and television series throughout his life. He got married to virginia shelley on 7th march 1931, later they divorce on 18th may 1943, after few days he got married to grace alberston on 29th may 1943.

When he was just 13 years old he made his first debut by acting a small role in one movie. In his starting career, he used to dance or sing in some movies that can be listed as A Connecticut Yankee (1931) and Just Imagine (1930). He appeared as the lead character's brother in the movie Alice Adams (1935) and also played opposite to Marx Brothers in the movie Room Service (1938). He started doing supporting and character roles when he became aged. He appeared in the movie It's a Wonderful Life (1946) in which he played the character of a businessman Wainwright. He also appeared as guest star in many NBC western series like 'Private Detective', in the David Janssen crime drama Richard Diamond he has appeared 2 times and The Californians. In the musical film 'Bye Bye Birdie' in 1963, he has given his final appearance as Sam. he done approx 100 movies and television series throughout his acting career. He also had served himself in the U.S. Army Air Forces during world war second.
