About Broncho Billy Anderson
Broncho Billy Anderson was also called Gilbert M. Anderson. He was born on March 21, 1880, in Little Rock, Arkansas, U.S. and died at the age of 90 on January 20, 1971, in South Pasadena, California, US. After his death, his body was cremated and the ashes were placed in a vault at the Chapel of the Pines Crematory in Los Angeles. He was an American film actor, director, writer, producer, and known for his Western film genre as he was the first star. He was the sixth child in his family and his father was Jewish and his grandparents moved from Prussia to united states while his mother is from Russia. When he was 3 years old his family shifted to Pine Bluff, Arkansas and to St. Louis, Missouri when he was 8 years old. He was married to Mollie Louise Schabbleman in 1910 and the couple has one child.
Career of Broncho Billy Anderson
He appeared in vaudeville and the theater when he was 18. Edwin S.Porter had hired him as an actor and occasional script collaborator in 1903 and In Porter's early motion picture The Great Train Robbery, he had played three roles.
When he had seen the film for the first time at vaudeville theater and was very happy to see the audience reaction he decided to stay in the film line and then he started to write, direct and act with another name that was Gilbert M. Anderson.
Anderson and George Kirke Spoor founded Essanay Studios in Chicago in 1907 which was famous as "S and A" and this was one of the major early movie studios. He had worked in more than 300 short films and played a variety of roles he had worked in a series of 148 silent shots and Broncho Billy was his first movie.
In his career, he traveled in the western United States with his crew shooting films many of his shots were in the Nile which is a small town in Alameda County, California. In 1916 he takes retirement from acting and sold his ownership to Essanay.
After that he returned to New York and bought Longacre Theater and start making plays he didn't get much success in it and he made his comeback as a producer and made a series of shorts with Stan Laurel, it also includes A Lucky Dog which was released in 1921 and he had worked first time with Oliver Hardy but he retired again in 1920 because of conflict with studio metro.
He sued Paramount Pictures in 1943 and demanded $900000 for a character Bronco Billy in the film Star Spangled Rhythm because he thinks the character reflected badly on him. In 1950 he started producing again as the owner of progressive Pictures and retired again.
