He ventured into the entertainment industry with his appearance in the Broadway show "The Member of the Wedding." He also worked in the film version of the play. He gained fame with his supporting role named Joey Starrett in the film "Shane" for which he also earned an Academy nomination. He starred in the TV miniseries "The Tenderfoot" after signing with Disney in 1964.
