He started his career in 1933 when he signed with Universal Pictures. He appeared as Colin in the film "Rulers of the Sea." He was signed by Paramount in 1941. He played Raven in the film "This Gun for Hire" with which he got popularity. He appeared in the films And Now Tomorrow and Two Years Before the Mast after returning from army service.
