Academy Award Winner Alan Arkin was born in Brooklyn, New York, the U.S. on March 26, 1934. He is the son of David I. Arkin who was a painter and writer and his mother Beatrice was a teacher. His contribution to the film industry is in the form of acting, directing and screenwriting. He was married to Jeremy Yaffe on 14 December 1955 but were divorced. After that, he married Barbara Dana on 16 June 1964. He also took divorce from her on 2 November 1999 and in the same year married Suzanne Newlander Arkin.

He has worked in many fields like acting, directing, singing, writing which were as under
Singing
He made a folk music group with his two friends in which he sang and also played guitar. This group reached number 4 on the Billboard magazine chart and also sang the song "Banana Boat Song" and "Choucoune". In 1985, he sang in the album Contemporary Broadway Revisited in two selections.
Writing
He has written many books some of them are Tony's Hard Work Day, The Lemming Condition, Halfway Through the Door: An Actor's Journey Toward Self and The Clearing. Written his autobiography An Improvised Life which was released in March 2011. He has written many short films like The Last Mohican, People Soup etc.
Directing
People Soup was the first his own directed 12-minute children's film starring his sons Adam and Matthew Arkin. Other his directed films were Little Murders, Fire Sale, Samuel Beckett Is Coming Soon and Arigo.
