  • In his childhood, he helps in household works like cooking food, laundry work and also helps in the family farm works. When he became 17 he was forced to complete his eighth grade again but he dropped out and starts spends his free time in hunting with a .22 rifle.
  • He registers to join Civilian Conservation Corps but could not accept. He was 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 m) tall and weighed 200 pounds at that time.
  • On September 16, 1939, he was selected as the Mess attendant in the United States Navy. Later after taking the training of Naval Training Station, Norfolk, Virginia he became ammunition ship Pyro, and then he was moved to the battleship West Virginia, where he was assigned as the main cook.
  • On December 7, 1941, more than 200 Japanese torpedo planes attack the USS West Virginia and the captain ordered him to take the injured person to safe places. Later he was ordered to load the guns but the captain sees the Miller was firing from that gun to the aircraft.
  • He also got a medal of honor for his bravery on April 1, 1942.
  • In 1947 the Doris Miller Foundation was founded.
  • With the Japanese submarine I-175, his ship was struck on November 24 and there was a blast in the ship and within few minutes the ship was drowned in the water and among 900 crew only 272 was survived. There his name was not on the list of the surviving people and later he 'presumed dead'.
  • He was honored by the 'Navy cross who was presented by the 'Chester W. Nimitz' and that time this award was the third-highest Navy award for gallantry.
