About Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

Shivaji Maharaj was an Indian ruler of Bijapur. He has a great contribution to the Hindu's protest against the Mughal Empire and their alliance including the Sultanate of Bijapur, the Sultanate of Golkonda, and the European colonial powers. He was crowned as Chhatrapati of his kingdom at Raigad Fort in 1674. He replaced Persian with Marathi and Sanskrit languages in court and administration. His idea also influenced the Indian Independence Movement which was about two centuries after his death. Even today, the ruler is remembered by Hindus as the protector of their religion.

Career of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj

He bribed the Bijapuri commander of the Torna Fort, Inayat Khan to acquire possession of the Fort in 1645. In 1656, he killed Raja Chandrarao More under a controversial set of conditions and seized from him the valley of Javali. He killed Afzal Khan and his forces decisively defeated the Bijapur Sultanate's forces. When Aurangzeb's maternal uncle Shaista Khan seized Pune with his better-equipped and a provisioned army of 80,000. He launched a surprise attack on Shaista Khan in Pune. Shivaji and group of 200 followers entered Pune, they pretended like they are invited to a wedding. They killed those they found there.

Did Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj takes alcohol? No. He never drank alcoholic drinks as he was under strict observation of his mother "Rajmata Jijabai".
Was Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the habit of Smoking? No.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was non vegetarian.There is no clear evidence about his diet but most of the Marathas eat non-veg.
His name is inspired by a regional deity Shivai, not with the name of Lord Shiva. He earned god-like stature with his works, not for his name.
He was a secular ruler.
He was secular who had several Muslims in his military rank. His secularity is cleared from the fact that he had married his daughter Sakhubai to a converted Hindu. He also helped those who want to convert into Hinduism.
He respected women.
Women felt safe in his reign as he made sure about the harsh punishment for the person who dishonoured women. Even the women from the captured territories are safe in his empire and were kept respectfully. No person can dare to do a rape or molested a woman as Shivaji had no mercy for them.
He wanted to maintain good relation with the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and also assisted him in conquering Bijapur.
But the things went wrong when two of his officers raided the Mughal territory near Ahmednagar. In turn, they raided his territory.
He increased his army from 2,000 men into 10,000 soldiers. He knows it very well that a good army means a powerful empire.
He devised modern techniques for the battle. As he was aware of the geography of the region, his enemy often used to get surprise by his sudden attack through his guerrilla tactics. He was also called as mountain rat because of his fight tactics.
He was very practical and wanted to win by hook or by crook. This is unbelievable that he was just 15 when he acquired the Fort of Torna from a Bijapuri commander and Fort of Kondana from an Adilshahi commander by bribing both of them.
He never appreciated his troops to sacrifice their life just for the reputation. He always told them to take a step back and regroup.
He also protected his territory from foreign invaders by protecting seas with a naval fleet. Any other king does not even think of this and he had developed an idea of the navy. He is also called Father of Indian Navy.
He stabbed Afzal Khan in a one-on-one battle. The story behind is that they had to meet in a hut that only allowed them to carry a single sword, but Shivaji knew that Afzal Khan would attack him. For the reason, he wore an armour under his dress and kill Afzal Khan afterwards.
He was a kindhearted ruler and welcome in his army to those who surrendered.
He was extremely careful about the common people. He made sure that troops do not possess any personal weapons & horses so that they were not misused. They were provided with arms only at the time of the battle. He never allows his troops to trouble the locals and encouraged them to buy if there is a shortage of ration.
He was the only ruler who was standing against Aurangzeb when he imposed Jizya tax on Hindus.
He was against cow slaughtering.
