Some Lesser Known Facts About Madam C. J. Walker
- She was the child who was born after the Emancipation Proclamation(issued on January 1, 1863) was signed. Her other family members were living as a slave but she was the only one who born in the freedom :) .
- At the age of seven she was orphaned and when reached to 10 she moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi and worked there as domestic. There she lives with her brother-in-law and her elder sister.
- To get rid of the misbehavior of his brother-in-law she married to the Moses McWilliams at the age of 14. Her husband died when she was just 20 but she remarries and later leaves her second husband also.
- She got her name Madam C. J. Walker after marrying her third husband Charles Joseph Walker who was the newspaper advertising salesman.
- When she moved to Saint Louis with her daughter she has done many odd jobs to give daughter a formal education. At that time she faces the problem of dandruff & baldness because she used some harsh products, it causes many skin disorders to her. At that time she learns about the hair care from her brother who was a barber.
- For Annie Turnbo Malone company she was the commission selling agent and also side by side she learns about hair care to start her own business.
- In 1993 she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame and a U.S. Postal Service made a postage stamp in honor of her on 1998.
- Along with giving a training to the employees she also tells or trains the black women that how they can become independent and make her own business.
- In 1917 around 20,000 women are trained under her company and then start carrying black satchels by wearing uniform of black and white skirt in United States and in the Caribbean offering Walker's hair pomade and other products packaged in tin containers carrying her image.
