Career of Georgia O'Keeffe

She studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1905 to 1906. Her oil painting Dead Rabbit with Copper Pot won her the League's William Merritt Chase still-life prize. She started teaching art in 1911. In 1916, her friend took her paintings to Alfred Stieglitz at his 291 Gallery and he agreed to display them.

Her love story is also amazing. Alfred Stieglitz who was a gallery owner liked her sketches and put them on a display. But when she came to know she asked him to immediately take her pieces down. After the incident, they became good friends and later married.
She became completely blind which prevent her to do more paintings. She also tried sculpting and produced numerous clay pots.
She was honored by The United States Postal Service by issuing a stamp with her "Red Poppy" painting.
She also worked as an art supervisor in a public school in Amarillo, Texas.
It is a matter of pride that she was the first woman who has given an independent exhibition of her artwork at the Museum of Modern Art.
One can be amazed of the fact that the area where she lived The northern part of the New Mexico desert is also called O'Keeffe country because most of her artwork was of that area.
