The San Diego Zoo Safari Park, formerly known as the San Diego wild animal park is the most famous tourist attraction in the area. It remains open all year long, even on holidays. So any time is the perfect time to take a trip to this park. It offers a chance for up-close encounters with majestic animals and to see animals that roam freely in the park.

- The park essentially began as a breeding program to supply the zoo but later developed into a Safari park in the year 1972. It is run by the Zoological Society of San Diego.
- It is located about 30 miles north of downtown San Diego and covers an area of over 1000 acres!
- The park has one of the country's most successful Californian condor breeding programs, bringing the numbers of this once critically endangered species of bird from 22 in the year 1987 to 369 and counting today.
- The Safari Park was awarded the "Edward H. Bean Award" in 1972 and 1974 for its successful hatching of the Abyssinian ground hornbill.
