The San Diego zoo is situated in Balboa Park, California. It is a renowned zoo with a mission to end the extinction of certain animal species. It is home to thousands of animals with over 600 species. Its distinct feature is that it replicates natural animal habitats with open-air and cage-less exhibits.
Some Lesser Known Facts About San Diego Zoo
- It is among one of the biggest zoos in the world with over 4,000 animals in its care. It also has the largest population of the endangered giant pandas. Other animals that you will find here are elephants, orangutans, monkeys, tigers, hippos, polar bears, etc.

- The zoo was opened about 100 years ago, in the year 1916. It covers an area of 100 acres. It is a renowned institution and a member of various associations like the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). San Diego Zoo Global also operates the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research.

- There have been several escape attempts at the zoo. The most famous escape artist is by the name of Ken Allen, a Bornean orangutan. He escaped so many times that zookeepers had to go ?undercover?, dressed as tourists, and understand how he escaped. Tom Van Wagner, a previous employee of the zoo and an animal control officer, captured a Tasmanian devil in a south-central San Diego home's garage.

- Visitors can take the guided tours of the zoo, which covers more than half of the park. It includes animal shows which are both entertaining and educational. You could also hop on Skyfari, the aerial tram. It offers a lovely aerial view of the grounds.

- Its varying animal habitats include the "Lost Forest", which features animals from across Africa, South America, and Asia's rainforests. There you will find gorillas, bonobos, orangutans, Malayan tigers, etc. The ?Panda Canyon? houses the Sichuan takin, red panda, and Mangshan Mountain Vipers. "Urban Jungle" consists of an Indian rhino, giraffe, kangaroo, and flamingo. The Monkey Trails showcases monkeys and other animals from the rainforests of Asia and Africa.

- The zoo received much coverage and attention when Australia donated 2 koala bears in the year 1925. They were named Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. They were the first koalas to arrive in the U.S.

- Ellen Browning Scripps donated funds to build the Scripps Flight Cage for shore and wading birds. Upon its inauguration, it was the biggest aviary in the world, measuring 95 feet high by 115 feet long. It features the colorful amethyst starling, tinkerbirds, and the sociable weaver.
