About Miami Zoo
The Miami Zoo, also known as the Miami-Dade Zoological parks and gardens, is the center of tourist attraction in the region. The institution cares for a wide variety of animals from Asia, Australia, Africa, and the Americas representing a broad mix of species. The trees, foliage, and soil are matched as closely as possible to the native habitats of the resident animals. It is built so as to protect and conserve wildlife and its species.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Miami Zoo
- The origin of the Zoo goes back to the year 1948 when it was known as Crandon Park Zoo on the island of Key Biscayne. Its boundaries covered about 48 acres of land and its first animals included some lions, an elephant, and a rhinoceros that had been stranded when a circus went out of business.

- The Zoo today covers an area of 750 acres of land donated by the federal government which used to be the Richmond Naval Air Station. It is home to more than 3,000 animals representing over 500 different species.

- The unique climate in South Florida enables the specialization of tropical and sub-tropical species from places like the South American rainforests, Asian tropics, and African plains. So if you're hoping to see any polar bears or penguins here, you will be disappointed.

- In the Asian section, the main attraction has been the popular white Bengal tiger exhibition. Visitors are given the opportunity to get close to and even brush one of the large Indian rhinoceros that are in Kaziranga Camp?s Rhino Encounter.

- The Australian section offers a chance to look at kangaroos, koalas, and a giant tortoise. In this area, one can also visit the Sami Amphitheater which offers different animal shows, cultural events, and concerts. This amphitheater can seat more than eight hundred guests and it has shown almost daily.

- Zoo Miami is an active leader in much global wildlife and environmental conservation initiatives. It has provided financial aid in helping upgrade the captive breeding facilities in Thailand zoos for endangered clouded leopards and fishing cats. It was also the founding member of the AZA's Butterfly Conservation Initiative.

- With over 3000 animals in its care, the Zoo spends about a million dollars annually, on feeding them. The diets of the animals are incredibly varied, ranging from mealworms and crickets to meat and fish smoothies. Each animal has a specific diet sheet that not only tells us the ingredients but also how those ingredients are prepared.
