The Walled City of Baku with Shirvanshah's Palace and Maiden Tower is a collection of monuments from the 12th to 15th century situated in the city of Baku of Azerbaijan. The Maiden Tower is about 29.5 meters long and was made in the 12th century. The tower is popular due to various legends associated with it. It was declared as a World Heritage Site in 2000 and was put on a list of Sites in Danger in the year 2003. It was removed from the list of Danger sites in 2009.

  • There are many legends prevalent relating to Maiden Tower including one of the fiery-headed girls who protected the residents from the enemy outside the tower. The girl appeared when the residents prayed to the Holy Fire and the God of Ahura Mazda.
  • According to another story, Baku's people were inside the tower and refused to surrender against the enemy. The enemy cut the water supply so that they have no option other than surrender. The Baku?s people prayed to the God of Ahura Mazda without food and water. At their request, God responded and an earthquake occurred which killed most of the army people of the enemy but the Holy Fire stopped burning.
