About Tombs of Buganda Kings at Kasubi

The Kasubi Tombs is a burial ground of four kings of Buganda. It is located in Kampala, Uganda. On the one hand, it is an outstanding example of traditional architecture while on the other hand, it is a spiritual and political site for the Ganda people. It earned the status of World Heritage Site in the year 2001. The site covers an area of 26 hectares. The site remains open for public visits from Monday to Saturday between 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Tombs of Buganda Kings at Kasubi

The whole building is made of vegetal material which made it an important building and is most remarkable for the whole sub-Saharan Africa.
The site was put on the list of the endangered site after a destructive fire that destroyed many important buildings of the place in March 2010. The cause of the fire is still not known. The reconstruction of the site started in 2014 by the government of Uganda with the funds provided by the government of Japan.
The site was used by Kabakas to perform rituals. Still, it is the most active religious place which provides a glimpse of Buganda culture.
It is an important historical and cultural symbol of East Africans and Ugandan people.
