About Tipasa
Tipasa was a Roman colony and was part of Mauretania Caesariensis province. The site is situated in coastal central Algeria. It was designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2002. It was conquered by Emperor Claudius in the first century. The city has ruins of the Roman Empire like baths, amphitheater, and cemeteries. It was placed in the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger in 2002 but was removed in 2006. The site is just 70 kilometers away from the capital city Algiers.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Tipasa

  • The city was destroyed several times. The first time, it was destroyed by Vandals in 430 but about a century later Byzantines rebuilt the city. At that time, it was named Tefassed. The city started flourishing but was again destroyed by Arabs in the seventh century.
  • It was an important trading center from the 6th to 2nd century B.C.
