About Slate Industry of North Wales

The Slate Industry of North Wales is an old slate industry believed to be of the Roman period. In older times, the slates were used to manufacture the roof of the fort at Segontium which is now called Caernarfon. Though the industry grew slowly until the early 18th century but rapidly expanded after that. There are various locations in northwest Wales like the Nantlle Valley quarries, the Penrhyn Quarry near Bethesda, and Blaenau Ffestiniog, where slate industries are located.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Slate Industry of North Wales

There were world's biggest two slate quarries. And the Oakeley mine at the Blaenau Ffestiniog was the World's biggest mine at its peak.
There was a big industrial altercation at the Penrhyn Quarry in the period starting from 1900 to 1903 which was the result of its decline
Visitors can see the National Slate Museum and get to know about the process of how it was mined and converted into usable at the time. There is also Padarn Country Park situated in a part of Dinorwig Slate Quarry while in some portion the Dinorwig power station is located.
To provide a complete view of the industry, numerous railways that used to carry the slates to the ports have been restored including the Ffestiniog Railway and the Talyllyn Railway.
The site was featured in various novels like Out of their night, Y Tywyn. Also, a film named "The Quarryman" showed the different sides of a slate quarryman's life.
