The Slate Industry of North Wales is an old slate industry believed to be of the Roman period. In older times, the slates were used to manufacture the roof of the fort at Segontium which is now called Caernarfon. Though the industry grew slowly until the early 18th century but rapidly expanded after that. There are various locations in northwest Wales like the Nantlle Valley quarries, the Penrhyn Quarry near Bethesda, and Blaenau Ffestiniog, where slate industries are located.
