About Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras
The Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras is an area in Luzon, Philippines. It contains five sites Mayoyao Rice Terraces, Hungduan Rice Terraces, Bangaan Rice Terraces, Nagacadan Rice Terraces, and Batad Rice Terraces It was assumed that the site is older than two thousand years. Though according to Ifugao Archaeological Project, it was made 400 years before. It was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995. It was placed on the list of danger sites in 2001 while was removed in 2012. It is the best example of modernization and adaptation of the human according to the environment.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras
- The collective efforts of the community members resulted in soil conservation, zoning, and planning. Also, a brilliant mind was used in pest control which was based on a variety of herbs alongside their religious rituals.
- In addition to rice terraces, the Hudhud performed by women of Ifugao is also listed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It contains narrative chants which are performed by elder women of the area at the time of rice sowing and harvesting as well as at funeral wakes and rituals.

- The site was under threat due to deforestation and changing climate which could destroy the terraces. But effective steps were taken by the Philippines as a result it was removed from the danger list.
- It is also called as Eighth Wonder of the World. Various tourists visit the site to see how fantastically their ancestors have carved these terraces. The profession of the older generation is adopted by the junior generation. Until now, most of the Ifugaos tribe members are rice producers.
