About Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal
The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is a navigable aqueduct situated on the River Dee in Wales, United Kingdom. It carries the Llangollen Canal and is 307 meters long. It is situated at a height of 38 meters and is about 3.7 meters wide. The water depth on the Aqueduct is five feet and three inches. Its construction started in July 1795 by Thomas Telford. It was completed in 1805 with stones and cast iron. It is an eighteen-arched structure and is included in the list of World Heritage Sites of UNESCO.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal
- It was made to be used by narrowboats and is the longest watercourse all over Great Britain. It is also the highest canal watercourse in the world.
- The word "Pontcysyllte" which is given to the Aqueduct means "the bridge that connects". It is a true example of the England and Wales union. It also connects three rivers Dee, Severn, and Mersey.
- The slender masonry piers used to construct the aqueduct were partly hollow and taper at their summit so that the aqueduct should be made the lightest possible.

- It is said that oxen blood, water, and lime were used to produce mortar.
- It holds about 1.5 million liters of water and it takes about two hours to drain the whole water from the aqueduct.
- The water has to cross an iron trough about 3.6 meters wide and 1.6 meters deep to reach the aqueduct from Horseshoe Falls situated close to Llangollen.
