Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve is a natural reserve that falls under the territory of both Guinea and Cote d'Ivoire. The area protected by the reserve is 17,540 hectares out of which 12540 hectares fall in Guinea while the rest 5,000 hectares are under the governance of Côte d'Ivoire. The reserve was founded in the year 1944 and was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981. It became a World Heritage Site in Danger in the year 1992.

  • The threat to its geomorphology and wildlife is the existence of the top quality iron ore and mining will destroy the wildlife and its natural beauty. Also, some human activities like hunting, farming, logging, grazing, and uncontrolled fires are also a threat to the reserve.
  • There is a difference in weather conditions between northern and southern slopes. Northern slopes are dry due to dry Harmattan wind from the Sahara while southern slopes are moister. Some parts have less precipitation as a result of the rain-shadow effect of the high ridge. Due to different climatic conditions, the area is rich in different types of plants and animal species. It has over two thousand vascular plant species alongside 107 species of mammals, 317 vertebrates,s, and 2500 invertebrate species.
