About Ironbridge Gorge
Ironbridge Gorge is a deep gorge located in Shropshire, England. It was formed at the end of the last ice age by a glacial overflow from the long drained away Lake Lapworth. The site is rich in minerals and rocks like coal, limestone, iron ore and clay that could be easily mined from the location. It covers an area of 547.9 hectare. It was called the Severn Gorge but after the construction of the popular iron bridge in 1779, the site got its current name.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Ironbridge Gorge
- The bridge is located on the site was the first of its kind at the time it was made. It links the town of Broseley with the towns of Madeley and Coalbrookdale.
- Women at the place had the third-lowest life expectancy at birth.
- There was a toll tax which each one had to pay for crossing the iron bridge. even the royal family had to pay the tax. It was removed in 1950. You can still see a board on the toll house.

- In 1932, an elephant who was promoting the Chapman's Zoo-circus passed the bridge.

- About 3000 pounds were funded by Abraham Darby III who was the grandson of Abraham Darby I for the construction of the bridge which is equal to 438 thousand pounds of today.
- There were talks of dismantling the bridge in the 1960s and selling it for scrap. But it was protected in the 1970s when it was listed in the World Heritage Sites.
