Historical Monuments of Mtskheta is a group of monuments in the city of Mtskheta. The city is situated in the province of Mtskheta Mtianeti of Georgia. The city is about 20 kilometers away from Tbilisi. It is located at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers. The city was founded in the 5th century BC. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1994. Georgian Orthodox Church declared it a holy city in the year 2014.

  • It was a big fortified city of the Kingdom of Iberia. It was the main economical and political center of the kingdom.
  • Apart from being rich in monuments and a holy city, it is also a beautiful gift of nature situated on a valley in which two rivers Mtkvari and Aragvi connect. It has numerous magnificent views which leave an unforgettable impression on the minds of the visitors.
  • It gives an impression of different ruling powers including the Roman Empire, Syria, the Persian Empire, Byzantium, and others.
  • The site also contains a mausoleum of rich women which is situated at the Mtskheta train station. It is estimated to date back to the 1st century AD. The monument is beautifully decorated with tiles which are just like a house with well-processed quadrats and a fronton. A small bronze statue of a young man playing the flute was also discovered from the place.
  • A glimpse of the medieval period is given by the Holy Cross Monastery of Jvari, Samtovro Monastery, and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. The site is also home to the grave of Mirian III, who declared Christianity as the official religion in Georgia, it is located in the monastery.
