About Hebron Al Khalil Old Town
The old city of Hebron is an ancient part of the city of Hebron in West Bank. It covers an area of 20.6 hectares. It surrounds the Cave of the Patriarchs, which was a traditional burial site of biblical Patriarchs and Matriarchs, It is a place of worship of Christian, Jews, and Muslims due to which it becomes sensitive in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Hebron. It became a World Heritage Site in the year 2017.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Hebron Al Khalil Old Town
- Tthe Hebron of antiquity was actually started in Greek or at the latest by Roman times. It was later on settled at Tel Rumeida which is about 200 meters away from the location. It developed into the center at the foundation of the Abbasid Caliphate era.
- The site has different mosques like Al-Jawali Mosque, Uthman ibn Affan mosque, Sheikh Ali al-Bakka Mosque, Qazzazin Mosque, and the Ibrahim hospice. Also, it has Avraham Avinu Synagogue which is a place of worship of Jews, and the Cave of the Patriarchs which is worshiped by both Jews and Muslims.

- Most of the structure remains unchanged since the Mamluk period. Also, have buildings of Ottoman-era from the eighteenth century.

- The site is in danger and is ignored as it belongs to the Jewish community and is near Israel. It is the only Palestinian city where both Israeli and Palestinian residents live side by side. It becomes a matter of conflict between both communities many times.
