About Hatra
Hatra was an old city located in eastern Nineveh Governorate of North Iraq. The city was founded in the 3rd or 2nd century BC and was abandoned in 241 AD. It is 290 kilometers away from Baghdad and 110 kilometers southwest of Mosul. The site is spread in an area of 300 hectares. It has ruins of Arabian, Mesopotamian and Parthian cultures. It was designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Hatra

  • There is a story prevalent to the fall of the city in the battle against Sassanid king Shapur I in 241. It is said that the daughter of the king named al-Nadirah fell in love with Shapur who exposed all the secrets to him and became a reason for the destruction of the city and the death of the king. It is also said that though Shapur married al-Nadirah but shortly killed her when he came to know about her dishonesty towards her father.
  • The city has ruins of various temples Hermes which belongs to Greek, Shamiyyah of Arabian, Shamash which is known as the sun god of the Mesopotamian. There is also a temple of a female deity named Ashurbel which is estimated as the combination of the Assyrian god Ashur and the Babylonian Bel.

  • The ruins of some inscription in Aramaic which is said to be the language spoken by Jesus are also found in some buildings.

  • The site was also featured in the movie named "The Exorcist" in which its great archways were shown.
  • The site is endangered due to regular efforts of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant to destroy the artifacts. In 2017, the sculptures and carved images of the site were demolished by the militants in the area in 2017. There were also signs of looting. Though the damage was minor the site is included in the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger.
