About Great Zimbabwe

It was an ancient city an important trade center between the 11th to 15th centuries in the area. It was founded in the 11th century AD. It was abandoned in the 15th century. The heritage site was separated into three groups: the Hill Ruins, the Great Enclosure, and the Valley Ruins. The site is designated as the world heritage site since 1986 by UNESCO. It is open for visitors from Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Great Zimbabwe

The place is located on the nearby side of Lake Kyle. The ruined city was believed to the capital city of an unknown kingdom.
The most primitive written mention about these ruins was in 1531 by a Portuguese captain. The initial European visit to the place was in the 19th century.
The city could have the housed of around 18,000 people. It acquires an area of 7.22 sq km.
Some studies suggested that this ancient city has served as a royal palace. Many scholars thought that the city was formed by the people of Gokomere culture.
The formation of the stone structures was sustained for about 300 years in the city.
