About Garamba National Park
Garamba National Park is a national park located in the north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The area is spread in about two thousand square miles. It was established in the year 1938. The park is maintained by African Parks in collaboration with the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature. It was designated as the World Heritage Site in 1980 and was included in the list of endangered sites four years later. It is adjacent to South Sudan and is included in the Sudano?Guinean savanna zone.

  • The subspecies of a giraffe named Congo giraffe is found here. It is the symbol of the park. It is the only known giraffe population in the DRC.

  • When one of the collared giraffes was killed by a poacher, it was capture in the satellite camera. The person was arrested and was handed to the South Sudanese authorities.

  • Though the park is known for preserving the animals and is against cruelty against animals it also has a dark past. Under the Belgium colonial rule in 1920, an Elephant Domestication Centre was formed here. They trained 100 elephants to work in agriculture fields.
