About Dorset and East Devon Coast
Dorset and East Devon Coast is a coast on the English channel in Southern England. The site covers an area of 154 kilometers from Exmouth in East Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset, It was included in the list of World Heritage sites in December 2001. The area is popular due to fossils of the Jurassic era found here. Natural features like arches, stack rocks, caves, and pinnacles are commonly found here. The weather conditions are also severe. Some parts of the coast are extremely dangerous and can cause severe damage to the ships.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Dorset and East Devon Coast
- The popular fossil collector Mary Anning( on whom the first tongue twister ?She sells Seashells was made) used to live here and her major discoveries of marine reptiles and other fossils were done here.
- Many fossils of extinct marine including amphibians, echinoderms, reptiles, mollusks, crustaceans are found here.
- The area has given sedimentary layers where each layer having different species of ammonite which is very helpful for the studies.
- The fossils of plesiosaurs, ichthyosaurs, and a pterosaur were also some of the major discoveries which this area has given.
- At the time of the Second World War, it became the property of the Ministry of War and the Portland Harbour was one of the largest bases of the Royal Navy.
