About Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape
Cornwall and West Devon is an old mining site. It was used to extract tin in mid 16th century. It got the status of UNESCO World Heritage site in July 2006. There were also plans to restart mining at South Crofty and to make a supermarket at Hyle Harbour, but the World Heritage Committee intervened and stopped the project. Port of Hayle, Wheal Peevor, Luxulyan Valley, Charlestown, Trewavas are some of the areas included in this site. You can easily arrive at the place using a bus from Penzance or by car where you can also explore the rural areas.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape

  • About half of the world's demand for arsenic was completed here in the late 19th century. Also, two-third of the total production of copper all over the world in the 18th and 19th centuries was produced here.
  • The mining process here was closed in 1998 at the same time when South Crofty Mine, Pool was closed.
