About Butrint
It is an old city located in Vlore County of Albania. It was resided by Greeks, and later on Romans. The city was abandoned in the Middle Ages following a major earthquake. The site is located just 14 kilometers away from Sarande and is very close to the Greek border. It is situated on a hill and is included in the regions of Butrint National Park. It became a World Heritage site in 1992 and became an endangered site in 1997.

  • It is the biggest archaeological site all over Albania. It was discovered by Italian archaeologist Luigi Maria Ugolini when Albania was ruled by Italy.
  • Butrint has witnessed many wars and changes in rulers, not only in Middle Ages but also in the Modern Ages including conflict between Normans and Venetians. It was inhabited by Greeks since 900s BC while ruled by Romans until the mid 2nd century then by Christians and Roman Catholics.
  • The site was subject to looting, lack of conservation, protection, and management which threatened the identity of the site. Many artifacts of the site were destroyed due to vandalism and theft.
