About Archaeological Site of Cyrene
Archaeological Site of Cyrene is an ancient Roman city located close to Shahhat, Libya. It was a Greek settlement later colonized by Romans. The city was founded by Greeks in 631 BC and was named after the spring Kyre. It is abandoned since the fourth century AD. It was designated as the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. The ruins of various cultures including Greeks, and Romans are found here.

- The city is also known for the Cyrenaics, a famous school of philosophy that was formed in the 4th century BC by a disciple of Socrates named Aristippus.
- It was a leader town of Libya having a commercial relationship with all the Greek cities. The city supplied Spartan forces alongside two triremes at the time of the Peloponnesian War. It became a Roman province in 74 BC.
- The city gave important philosophers like Michel Onfray. The famous mathematician and astronomer Eratosthenes was also born here.
