About Angkor

Angkor is an ancient city located in Cambodia. The city was founded in 802 AD by king Yasovarman I. The city is abandoned since 1431. The city was situated north of the Tonle Sap lake and south of the Kulen Hills. It is popular due to its magnificent temples which are over 1000 in counting. The famous temple of Angkor War is also situated here. Cambodian nationals do not need to buy a ticket while foreigners are required to pay for visiting the area.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Angkor

The Angkor Wat temple located at the site is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Cambodia receiving over two million visitors per year.
It is the biggest pre-industrial city in the world. The water management planning of the city was also the work of a brilliant mind which including storing, stabilizing, and dispersing water all over the area. They have used this water management to irrigate the field to substitute the unpredictable monsoon.
The temple of Angkor Wat is so popular in Cambodia that can be also seen on the country's national flag.
While visiting the Angkor Wat temple, you can find ruins of the Hindu religion including temples dedicated to God Vishnu, God Shiva as well as Shiva Lingas. Also, Buddhist temples of both Mahayana and Theravada varieties are found at the site.
The temple has inscriptions in both Sanskrit and Khmer with names of both Hindu and local ancestral deities.
The five towers of the temple represent Mount Meru which is according to Hindu mythology is a sacred five-peaked mountain.
The Angkor Wat temple is oriented towards the West while other temples are oriented towards the east. It is concluded as the direction west represents death in Hinduism the temple was used for the funerary purpose for Angkorian. Also, the bas-relief at the Angkor Wat reads anti-clockwise which is just opposite to the normal temples which are usually clockwise which also gives a hint about its association with funeral rituals.
This magnificent temple was made using five million tons of sandstone. Each block is of weight up to 1500 kilogram. It wonders how they manage to set them at the required position. According to an inscription, 300 thousand laborers plus 6000 elephants were engaged for 35 years to create this masterpiece.
Visitors can know about the various stories of Hindu and Buddhist religions which are written on thousands of bas-relief on the walls of the temple.
Though the number of tourists is reduced due to the Covid-19 pandemic it is an important temple religiously and historically. It should be conserved and must be visited to know about the glamorous past of Hindu and Buddhist religion.
