About Ancient City of Bosra
The site is a part of Bosra town in Southern Syria. It was the capital of the Roman Empire in the Arabian province in the second century AD. It was called Nova Trajana Bostra at the time. It became a World Heritage Site in 1980. It was entered into the list of World Heritage Site in Danger in the year 2013. The site is important as it contains ruins of the Roman, Muslim, and Byzantine eras.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Ancient City of Bosra
- The site has Roman Theatre of 2nd-century and the basilica of the martyrs Sergios dated from the sixth century, and other ruins of the Roman period. It was an important center for food production at the time of Emperor Philip the Arab.
- According to Islam, the region is associated with the life of Prophet Mohammed who visited the town two times. It is also said that he became a prophet after his visit to the town. Also, it was an important stoppage for the pilgrims who were going to visit Mecca and Medina. It is the home to one of the oldest mosques in Syria named Mosque of Al-Omari in addition to other wonderful mosques.
