About Thalaiyar Waterfalls
Located in Tamil Nadu, the Thalaiyar Waterfalls is a Horsetail type waterfall. A single drop of the Manjalar River from the slopes of the verdant Palani Hills, forms the waterfall. Its elevation is 820 metres whereas its total height is 975 ft. It is noted to be on the 267 rank in the world on behalf of height. The falls are deemed as India?s 6th highest waterfall. It is seen across the valley as a long slender white strip of gushing water on a surroundings of black rock cliff face.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Thalaiyar Waterfalls
- Along the stream of the Manjalar Reservoir, a small shrine can be found, which is dedicated to the Goddess Kamakshi.
- The waterfall is evident from the Dum Dum Rock viewpoint on the Batalugundu-Kodaikanal Ghat Road, which is located 3.6 kilometers away to the west.

- It is possible for one to walk along the wall and get near the center of the falls.
- The falls is believed as unreachable to the general public, as there is no direct road to it.
- It is considered as a challenging hike destination. It is possible to hike to the bottom of the falls in the dry season as in Mansoon the cascading water remains at its peak.
- There are not enough words to describe the bewitching beauty of this waterfall, though it is also a deadly place. The most noticed case of death was reported when two Western tourists died in 2006 after falling from the top of the Falls.
- A legand surronds the falls which states that Kamakshi was born here. It is said that she was born at the foot of the falls in a bamboo bush and therefore she is called Moonkilanai Kamakshi.
- Another name of the fall is Amma Machhu, meaning in the middle of a grove of teak trees.
