About Jog Falls

Located in the Western Ghats in Siddapur taluk Uttara Kannada District, Jog Falls is noted as the Second Highest Plunge Waterfall in India. The Sharavati River dropping down 253 m the hill creates the fall. The major tourist attraction in Karnataka is a segmented waterfall. Average width of the cataract falls is 472 m. Sources suggest that its average flow rate is around 153 m³/s.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Jog Falls

It heavily relies on rain and monsoon season after the construction of Linganamakki Dam, which is a hydroelectricity plant near the falls.
The white water is ranked 13th in the world by the waterfall database for the number of tourists it attracts every year.
Apart from the beauty of Jog Falls, one can enjoy many other popular sites around including Linganamakki Dam, Dabbe Falls and more.
In order to reach the falls, one needs to take a 2 hours drive from the main Shimoga city.
All four segments are named due to their certain characteristics. The first one Raja is an unbroken stream. The second one goes by the name Roarer as it is a tough and aggressive current that flows down to encounter the Raja column. The third is Rocket that gushes down in different jets. Fourth is Rani, which is a quiet stream with falls in foam.
Steps from the viewpoint to the bottom of the hill have been constructed by the Tourism Department, where the waterfall can be seen at the reverse side. There are a total of 1400 steps to arrive at the bottom of the hill.
