About Glodok
Glodok is a village located in West Jakarta of Indonesia. It is also known as Chinatown as most of the residents in the area belong of Chinese descent. It is inhabited by ethnic Chinese since the colonial era and designated for them in November 1740. It has become a tourist attraction due to a glimpse of Chinese culture in Indonesia alongside various shopping areas and other things in the village.
How To Reach Glodok
The village is easy to reach using bus service of TransJakarta, Mayasari Bakti and city transport which leave you at Glodok bus stop. If you are going there by train than nearest train stations are Mangga Besar, Kampung Bandan, Jakarta Kota, and Jayakarta.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Glodok
- It is the biggest Chinatown area all over Indonesia and is one of the biggest Chinatowns around the globe.
- The place is popular for shopping centers, some of them are Glodok plaza, Orion Plaza, Metro Glodok, Pasar Pagi market and Glodok Makmur. You can easily shop for the original and bootleg audio and video discs in this village.

- Don't forget to get the blessings at old temples which are Kim Tek le Temple, Dharma Sakti Temple, Dharma Jaya Toasebio Temple, and Hui Tek Bio temple which was made in the 17th century at the time when the Chinese came here as traders and manual laborers.

- Chap Goh Mei celebration is also a must-see event in this place when streets are decorated with handmade beautiful lanterns. These lanterns look beautiful in daylight due to their bright colors and in the nighttime, they attract visitors when they glow.

- If you are a food lover then you must visit the place as the area has numerous restaurants offering Chinese foods like gado-gado, soto betawi, ketupat sayur and sek ba. Traditional Chinese medicine and cheap electronic goods are also available here.

- The area also has a black past. About 5000 Chinese people were killed in October 1740, while in the next year; they were sent outside the city walls and were forced to live at this place. It was a sensitive area in May 1998 riots when there was tension between Chinese Indonesian and pribumi. Still, you can see the anti-Falun Gong sign on the streets of the town.

- Though the area is inhabited by most Chinese people all of them do not speak Mandarin. There are also Hokkien and Indonesian-speaking people.
