About Farafra Desert
Farafra Desert is the White Desert situated in the Farafra depression. It is also a national park and got such protection in 2002. The desert is about 45 kilometers away from the town of Farafra. It spread in an area of 300 kilometers square and is home to many endangered species like Rhim gazelle, Dorcas gazelle, Sand cats, jackals, and Barbary sheep. It is about 32 to 353 meters above sea level.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Farafra Desert
- The visitors can also witness large white chalk rocks which are often created due to erosion by wind and sand.
- It is also a place for cliffs, sand dunes alongside Wadi Hennis and Oases at different parts of the desert.
- It is said that the cursed ghost of Pharaoh Akhenaten roams in this desert. According to the ancient belief, he abolished and desecrated traditional gods though was cursed by Egyptian priests.
- Though the ghost is said to been unharmful but still many locals avoid going alone at this place especially at night time.
