About Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus District
Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus are two urban areas districts in Hamburg. The areas were founded on narrow islands in the Elbe River between 1885 and 1927. It covers an area of 26.08 hectares. Some parts of the districts were included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in July 2015. The districts are popular for the large office buildings in the Brick Expressionism style of the early 20th century. The site was perfectly designed alongside canals for navigating.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Speicherstadt and Kontorhaus District
- After the huge fire of Hamburg in 1842 and a cholera epidemic in 1892, there was a shortage of living space in the city. The need for big construction arises to meet the requirement of the growing demand.
- Chilehaus was constructed between 1922 and 1924. It was designed by Fritz Hoger for Henry B. Sloman who used to trade with Chile-saltpeter that's why the house was also named based on his work.

- The Miramar-House belongs to the trading company Miramar, it was completed in 1921/22. The building is a home to sculptures by Richard Kuöhl which is situated in the entrance area.
- The Sprinkenhof is also an important building located in the area. It was designed by architects Hans and Oskar Gerson[4] and Fritz Höger. It was constructed between the period of 1927 and 1943.
