About Qutub Shahi Tombs
Qutub Shahi Tombs is a historical monument located in Machilipatnam, Hyderabad, India. It is situated near the popular Golconda Fort. The monuments contain tombs of various kings of the Qutub Shahi dynasty. It was built in 16th and 17th centuries and was restored between 2013 to 2019 by Telangana State Archaeology and Museums Department. It was made using Indo-Islamic architecture style. It has a height of about 42 meters with 28 open arches. The place is located in north of outer perimeter wall of Golkonda Fort and its Banjara Darwaza. It is just twelve kilometers from Hyderabad and is easily accessible by road. The timings for visitors are between 9:30 am to 4:30 pm throughout the week at a nominal cost of just 10 per person and half the price for children.

Bus
Buses numbers 1191, 216M, 217D/A, 300D/126 and 65S goes to the location. After getting one of these buses you have to leave the bus at a nearest bus stand which includes Virat Nagar, Galaxy Bus Stop, Toli Chowki, and Jubilee Hills. The destination is located at a walking distance from these bus stands.
Metro Train
The nearby metro station to the location is Jubilee Hills Checkpost, Virat Nagar and Toli Chowki. With a small walk from these stations, you can reach the destination.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Qutub Shahi Tombs
- Only remains of the original tombs are now left. At that time it was overlaid with blue and green tiles, but now there are only few pieces of those tiles. It was well furnished with chandeliers, carpets, and velvet canopies on silver poles. There were also copies of Quran so that the visitors can recite the verses from the holy book. Also, there were golden spires which were fitted over the kings’ tombs to differentiate them from other tombs.
- The tomb has a beautiful surrounding garden. At the time of Qutb Shahi rulers it was called “Lagar-e-Faiz Athar.” Here some item or dance or song and occasional plays were organized to entertain the residents free of cost every evening.
- The complex contains seven tombs of formers kings of Golconda. Also having tombs of other members of royal family. The smaller tombs are of single stores while larger tombs are of double storied. The most important tomb here is of the founder of the dynasty, Sultan Quli Qutub-ul-Mulk.
- Every tomb has an adjacent mosque. It also takes a mortuary bath, where the bodies of the dead kings were washed according to the ritual before they were buried at their final resting place.
- The most attracting feature of the complex is Deccan Festival, which is organized by Telangana State Government every year. Also, the surrounding garden “Ibrahim Bagh” serves as a picnic spot for the visitors.
- The complex provides a glimpse of the life of the rulers of the Qutb Shahi dynasty and must be visited to know the history of the place.
