Vaishno Devi is one of the most popular temples in India. It is situated in Jammu and Kashmir region and is dedicated to Maa Vaishno which is worshiped as a combined avatar of goddesses Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati. The beautiful location of the temple combined with the trekking route attracts a lot of tourist. How To Reach Vaishno Devi Temple
Maa Vaishno Devi is a popular tourist destination where visitors go to get blessings of the Goddess. Several means of transport are available which you can opt according to your budget and convenience to reach there.
Bus
Many travel companies offer a tour to Vaishno Devi, where you can book a ticket with the group and visit the temple comfortably. If you are going there on your own. You can take a bus up to Katra bus stand, from there you can take an auto-rickshaw or any other local means of transport to Banganga and start the track alongside other pilgrims. After 14 kilometers long track, you will reach the destination.
Train
Many trains go to the Katra Station. You can book a ticket to Katra from your hometown and after reaching there, you can take any of the local means of transport which will leave you at Barganga where you have to register your journey and start treking. If you don't want to walk in the long trek, you can book a horse. The trust has created several counters from where you can book a horse, a stroller for kids and palki for elderly people. If you are good at walking, then it's better to enjoy the trek, chanting "Jai Mata Di" all the way until you reach the temple at the top.
Air
Helicopter service is also available for elderly people or those who want to visit the temple but have shortage of time. The Katra helipad is located two kilometers away from Katra bus stand. This helicopter will leave you at Sanjhichatt helipad and from there you can reach the temple with the help of ropeway.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Vaishno Devi Temple
- According to the belief, Lord Vishnu promised Vaishno Devi to marry in his tenth incarnation Kalki Avatar and told her to meditate at Trikut parvat until his arrival as Kalki at the end of Kalyug.

- According to the legend, Vaishno Devi came to help a poor Brahmin Shridhar Pandit who was suffering in misery in Katra. The goddess came to him disguising herself as a little girl and ordered him to prepare for a big feast to feed poor. The goddess arranged for all the food but at the same time a tantrik named Bhairav Nath also came for feast and ask for nonveg and alcohol. The goddess replied that no nonveg will be served in the feast for which Bhairav nath becomes angry and tried to grab the hand of little girl. The little girl disappears and hide at Ardha Kunwari which is at the halfway from Katra to the cave. She meditate there for nine months that’s why it is also called as Garbhajun as the time was equal to the time the baby stays in mother’s womb. Lord Hanuman guard the cave during the period. When the goddess came out of the cave, Bhairav Nath was still there and asked the goddess to marry him. At last goddess beheaded Bhairav Nath, his body fell at the gate of the cave while head at the mountain where Bhairav temple is located. The devil apologized from the goddess for his act and the kindhearted goddess bless him that all the Pilgrims who go to Vaishno Devi will also go to Bhairav temple afterward which will complete their journey.
- It is also said that the place where Vaishno Devi temple is located is the same place where Goddess Durga slayed Mahisasura.
