About Kilmainham Gaol
With a magnificent history of almost 225 years, stands tall the Kilmainham Gaol Museum in the Kilmainham district of Dublin, Ireland. A former prison, it is now a museum run by the Office of Public Works. Numerous Irish leaders and personalities were imprisoned and executed at the prison. At present, it is a major museum and an audio-visual presentation lays out the past developments of the site.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Kilmainham Gaol
- The prison was built in 1796 and was finally closed in 1924.
- It was initially called new Gaol to avoid confusion with an existing prison. The official name was County of Dublin Gaol.
- Prominent Irish figures like Robert Emmet, Henry Joy McCracken, Anne Devlin, and Charles Stewart Parnell were held in the jail.
- Most of the hangings took place in front of the prison until 1820. A hanging room was built in 1891.
- Each cell was around 28 meter2 in the area.

- Prisoners were not segregated based on age or gender.
- Up to 5 prisoners were held in each cell.
- Due to poor conditions for women, 30 women-only cells were added in 1840.
