About Shaniwar Wada
Shaniwar Wada is a historical building situated in Pune city of Maharashtra, India. The fort was constructed in 1732 for the Peshwas of the Marathas Empire. It was under their control until 1818 after the defeat of Peshwas against British East India Company. A major portion of the fort was destoyed in 1828 due to a massive fire, but the remaining structure is now maintained by tourism department of India. According to the estimates at least a thousand people live in this fort by 1758.

  • The fort is also popular for its haunted reputation. Narayanrao the tenth Peshwa was murdered by the guards in 1773 on the orders of his uncle Raghunathrao and aunt Anandibai. According to the legend, his ghost still haunts the fort and cries, saying “Kaka mala vachava” (Uncle save me) on full moon nights. What make it sad was that he was crying for help from the same mischievous person who ordered guards to kill him. He was just sixteen years at the time of his death and was the only surviving descendent of Nana Saheb.
