Moulin Rouge, French for "red mill", is a very famous cabaret in Paris. Originally started as a dance performed by courtesans who operated from the site, the can-can dancing found its way into the modern day entertainment and developed into a much bigger picture. Cabarets are now opened throughout the world.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Moulin Rouge
- The Moulin Rouge remains a much visited tourist spot and a centre of attraction. It is known as the first establishment that caused to sensationalize the Champagne-filled parties that pioneered cabaret and the famous French cancan dance. The club was first open in 1899 and quickly gained popularity.

- During the "Belle Epoque" period during the WW I, the bright red windmill of the Moulin Rouge became symbolic of Paris' Red Light District. It hosted dance performers including burlesque shows and magic shows as well. While it was considered "shocking" and "inappropriate" in England, it remained successful in France.

- It is a presupposed notion that Moulin Rouge only houses women as dancers but that is untrue. There are many male dancers as well. They are required to be not only be entertaining and fit but also possess the serious dance training with a good classical base and talent in modern jazz.

- The original club, built-in 1899 was burned down soon in the year 1915. A fire that broke out due to a short circuit caused the established to burn down and destroyed the ballroom and the auditorium. For 6 years, the cabaret was closed down until restoration in 1921.

- The iconic high kick leg is not just a part of the dance routine. Historically, it was seen as a warning sometimes, to men who might take liberties and unwanted behavior, threatening a kick in the face was a signal that was taken quite seriously. Or sometimes, it was used to win a bet where the woman vows to be able to remove a man?s hat without even using her hands!
