About Manovo Gounda St Floris National Park
Manovo-Gounda St.Floris National Park is a national park situated in the Central African Republic. It is located in the Bamingui-Bangoran province in between the Vakaga River and Manovo River which are flowing in its eastern and western border. The site is just 40 kilometers away from N?Dele. It spread in an area of about 17400-kilometer square. It was founded in the year 1979. The park is popular for animal species like black rhinoceroses, Sudan cheetahs, buffalo, leopards, giraffes among others. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Manovo Gounda St Floris National Park
- The park also had species of western black rhinoceros which became extinct in 2011.
- In early 1997, the park has suffered unlawful grazing and hunting by equipped hunters. They also shot four members of the park staff. About 80 percent of the park's wildlife had been destroyed in the accident. All development projects and tourism were stopped for some time. It was put on a list of World Heritage Site in Danger following the incident.
- The national protected area is habitat to a large number of land animals like cheetah, rhinoceros, as well as a number of waterfowl species.
- 4. At the beginning the area of the park was just 13500 hectares and it was called Oubangui-Chari National Park. It was enlarged from time to time and also renamed several times. It got its current name in 1979.
