About Los Katíos National Park
Los Katíos National Park is a reserved area in the northwest of Colombia. It is spread in an area of the 720-kilometer square. The park was established in the year 1974. It also falls under the jurisdiction of Panama is a part of Darien Gap. The area of Panama is called Darien National Park. It was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It was put on the list of endangered sites from 2009 to 2015.

  • The region also has its rich history. It was resided by the first settlers about twenty thousand years before who is known for using the land bridge from North to South America. Also, it was inhabited by the Guna tribe who immigrated to Panama after internal fighting.
  • The park was under the threat due to deforestation, illegal fishing and hunting, and unauthorized settlement which was disturbing the ecological balance of the forest. But effective measures were taken by the authorities which reduced the illegal extraction of timber and overfishing since 2015.
