About Kahuzi Biega National Park
The Kahuzi-Biega National Park is a national park located close to Bukavu town on the eastern side of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The park is near the west bank of Lake Kivu and the Rwandan border. It is spread in an area of 6000-kilometer square. It was founded in the year 1970 by Adrien Deschryver. It was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1980.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Kahuzi Biega National Park
- The park is unique in itself due to its biodiversity and being home to the rare species of Eastern lowland gorilla. It is one of the last refuges for this endangered species.

- Besides gorillas, it is home to about 1178 species of plants in the mountainous region, 349 species of birds, and about 136 species of mammals as of 2003 records.

- Its name is derived from the two inactive volcanoes existing within the limits of the park.

- The park has six different types of vegetation such as bamboo forest, peat bog, swamp forest, the peak rainforest, bamboo forest, subalpine heather, and more.
- The park authorities also allow gorilla trekking which requires a permit from the park headquarters. They allow you to spend one hour with the gorillas. (Take care, the lowland gorillas are much bigger than the mountain gorillas)

- You can also go for a hike in the mountains located in the park alongside enjoying birdwatching and walking alongside waterfalls. The Tshibati waterfall touches the travelers with a mist and its loud voice thunders in the ear. Surely, you will not forget this wonderful experience.
